Starting out it's easy to become overwhelmed with all the terms floating about - where do you start?! Here, is the answer. We've broken down some of the most commonly used words and types of cloth nappy.
AIO: (All-in-Ones). An AIO nappy consists of only one piece with inbuilt absorbant and waterproof layers. The absorbent insert is attached to the outer shell and doesn’t require “stuffing”. They don’t require assembly so are convenient to use. They may take a little longer to dry unless the attached parts fold out. Examples of AIO nappies include Smart Bottoms 3 in 1 and Sweet Pea Bamboo All in One.
AI2 (All-in-Twos): An AI2 nappy is similar to the AIO except the absorbent layer isn’t attached permanently to the waterproof cover. It has a set of snaps (or a fold) that attach the absorbent inner layer to the inside of the nappy. When changing an AI2 nappy you can either just replace the inner layer reusing the same shell; or replace the entire nappy if needed. Replacing just the inner layer will reduce laundry and prolong the life of the waterproof cover and reducing the number of covers you need to buy. Examples of AI2 nappies are Best Bottoms and Grovia Hybrid.
Aplix: More commonly known as Velcro or Hook & Loop. It is a type of closure used instead of snaps. It is quicker and easier to close, however it has less longevity than snap closure. Aplix can gather lint over time and become less effective. It is also easier for curious toddlers to open!
Cloth Wipes: Cloth wipes are reusable and washable fabric squares used to clean up a soiled baby bottom. Cloth wipes are usually made of micro-terry, velour, hemp, bamboo, or flannel cloth. You can pre-moisten the wipes (using a wipes warmer or similar container) or wet them at the time of use to wipe baby. Wipes can be washed along with the rest of your cloth nappy laundry. Wipes can be moistened with water or other wipes solution, ideal for very sensitive babies that may react to chemicals in disposable wipes.
Covers/Wraps: Covers/wraps are a separate waterproof cover that can be used with fitted and prefold nappies. They come in PUL, wool or fleece. PUL is the most popular choice for day and night as it is easy to care for, maintenance free and very trim. Wool or fleece covers are also popular options for overnight, over a fitted nappy.
Fitted nappies: A fabric, formed nappy with no waterproof layer is referred to as a fitted nappy. Fitted nappies are usually cotton or bamboo. A fitted nappy requires a nappy cover to contain wetness or a wool/fleece cover to allow for evaporation and is great for nights, naps, or heavy wetters. Unlike other cloth nappies a fitted nappy is absorbent all over the nappy and not just in the “wet zone.” Some brands of fitted nappy may have stay-dry liners to keep your baby feeling drier. A very popular brand of fitted nappy is the Tots Bots bamboozle.
Hybrid: A hybrid nappy can be used like a cloth nappy or as a disposable nappy. A hybrid nappy consists of a waterproof shell or cover that can be reused and washed with either a cloth insert or disposable insert. A very popular hybrid is the GroVia.
Liners:Liners are an optional thin layer of cloth or paper that is used between the nappy and the bottom. Liners provide a layer of stain protection for the nappy and help keep solid waste from sticking. They can be flushable/biodegradable for single use, or a reusable washable type for example a fleece liner which provides a stay dry layer against baby’s skin as well as protecting the nappy from soiling. Liners should be used when using any sort of rash cream as rash creams can cause build up and absorbency problems in your nappies.
Nappy Cover: When using a pre-fold, flat, or fitted nappy you will want to use a nappy cover to keep wetness contained. Covers are usually made of a fabric with a waterproof PUL backing, but they can also be made of fleece or wool. Nappy covers are budget friendly and work great for many families and they can also reduce your nappy laundry. Nappy covers may be one-sized or sized and examples are the Sweet Pea nappy cover or the TotsBots Stretchy wrap.
Pocket Nappy: An outer PUL shell with an inner stay dry lining. There is an opening either at the front/middle or back of the nappy through which the absorbent insert are placed (stuffed!) This type of nappy allows you to fully customise the amount and type of absorbency by using different inserts. Bamboo, hemp, microfibre, or a combination. Pocket nappies are quicker drying as they are disassembled before washing, however they do require reassembling when dry. Examples of pocket nappies are Charlie Banana, SweetPea One Size Pocket and Baba & Boo.
Wool Soakers: Wool or fleece Soakers (covers) are popular options for overnight, over a fitted nappy. The wool and fleece covers are breathable, absorb moisture and prevent leaks. A wool cover can hold up to 40% of its weight in moisture without feeling wet, and due to its high lanolin content, creates a virtually waterproof outside cover. Also available in Longies (like trousers) and Shorties (shorts). (Soakers can also refer to the booster/insert in a pocket of AI2 nappy).Wool needs special care, with hand-washing and lanolising every few weeks to maintain their waterproofing however they have superior moisture absorption and leak prevention than fleece cover. Wool covers can be aired unless soiled as they have a ‘self-cleaning’ ability. Fleece is inexpensive and can just be put in the washing machine with your nappies. People often struggle to see how wool and fleece covers work, but believe us they do!
